Ken Skates welcomes crackdown on speeding motorcyclists in Wrexham

Assembly Member Ken Skates has welcomed a police crackdown on ‘dangerous’ speeding motorcyclists in rural Wrexham.

Mr Skates, the Labour AM for Clwyd South, recently contacted North Wales Police after a concerned constituent reported irresponsible bikers riding at break-neck speeds on the A525 in Bwlchgwyn.

Mr Skates said: “I wrote to Chief Constable Mark Polin after being made aware of the ongoing issue of speeding bikers on the A525, and I’m pleased to hear the force has identified the area as one those it is monitoring and cracking down on.

“The speed limit was recently reduced from 60mph to 50mph along the stretch but it is clear that far too many people are still driving at dangerous speeds which would be too fast for a motorway, and there are obvious concerns about accidents.

“I asked Chief Con Polin if it would be possible to increase police presence along the stretch of road from the Moors Inn to the Wrexham boundary during the busy weekends as a deterrent, and am delighted to hear action is being taken.”

Mr Skates added: “The area is already regularly patrolled by North Wales Police as part of its initiative Operation Darwin, which focuses on motorcycles.

“In addition Go Safe, the road casualty reduction partnership, has now identified the area as one of its ‘red routes’ – which means there will be another targeted crackdown on irresponsible drivers of all vehicles and an increased presence.

“I am pleased North Wales Police share my concerns and those of my constituents over this important issue, and I would like to thank Chief Con Polin and Inspector Martin Best for their swift response and action. I hope these measures will help reduce speeding along the route and ultimately save lives.”
