AM supports residents campaigning for speed reduction on dangerous Overton road

CLWYD SOUTH AM KEN SKATES is backing campaigners fighting to reduce the speed limit on a 60mph road on which a nine-year-old boy died.

Residents and community leaders in Overton have been calling for the limit on the A539 leading to the village to be cut for more than a decade.

Proposals are due to go out to public consultation to half the 60mph limit to 30mph, the same restriction that applies through the village itself.

CLWYD SOUTH AM KEN SKATES said: “Residents and community leaders in Overton have been calling for a reduction in the 60mph speed limit leading up to the village for many years, and I fully support them. I also fully support the proposals to introduce a 20mph limit outside St Mary’s School.

“I congratulate everyone involved in the continuing campaign, in particular my Labour colleague Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones for the enormous amount of work she has done to get things to this stage. I hope these concerns are listened to and addressed. I would urge anyone who wants to see these limits reduced contact Wrexham County Borough Council.”

The proposals will go out for public consultation and will then be discussed by councillors later this year before a final decision is made.

The stretch of road is where nine-year-old Robert Gaunt was killed four years ago. His death was not caused by speeding, but sparked renewed calls for action.
