AM wants Wrexham Council to curb speeding in Pontfadog, near Chirk

Assembly Member Ken Skates has urged Wrexham Council to do ‘everything possible’ to improve road safety outside a village school.

Mr Skates, the Labour AM for Clwyd South, was contacted by concerned constituent Gayle Watkin in Pontfadog regarding speeding and dangerous driving on the B4500.

He said: “Mrs Watkin got in touch with me to ask for my support for road safety measures in the village, as there have been several attempts over the years without any success. There is an ongoing – and growing – problem with speeding through Pontfadog, and I’m told there have been several accidents in the past few months.

“The residents are hoping to have flashing signs either side of the village, speed bumps and a barrier outside the school gate as there is only a narrow pavement before the main road.”

Mr Skates, who wrote to Wrexham Council in early June over the issue, said: “The headteacher and the school governors also want to see something done, so I sincerely hope we will finally see some action to protect the children of Pontfadog.”

The council’s response, received by Mr Skates this week, said: “The B4500, and in particular that length of this road within Pontfadog, will be considered for such works during the 2015/16 financial year.”

Mrs Watkin said: “As a resident and coordinator of the Pontfadog road safety campaign, I feel council action is long over-due. Having said that, the village is grateful that something could finally be done.”

Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones added: “I know constituents will be well aware of how important road safety is to me, and speeding and dangerous driving through Pontfadog are a long-standing problem.

“I’m glad that the council has now agreed to look at introducing safety measures. They’re certainly needed, and action at last would be a victory for the residents.”

Mr Skates has also written to North Wales Police regarding issue.
