AM welcomes safety action at ‘confusing’ Cefn Mawr crossing

Assembly Member Ken Skates has welcomed long-awaited safety work to fix faulty lights at a road crossing used by schoolchildren.

Clwyd South AM Ken Skates praised Cefn Mawr councillor Derek Wright for pushing for action at the pelican crossing near Ysgol Min y Ddol in his ward.

Mr Skates said: “A resident contacted me and said the lights haven’t worked properly for more than a year and nothing has been done. He was worried someone could be hit because of the confusion it’s causing – people don’t know when to go and drivers don’t know when to stop.
“It has been reported to the council several times, but it transpires it’s Tesco’s responsibility and I’m pleased the company has confirmed the work will be done soon.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “After some uncertainty around the ownership of the road, we are pleased to confirm that our maintenance team will be fixing the lights as a matter of urgency.”

Mr Skates added: “This crossing is used regularly by children so it is important the situation is remedied as soon as possible. With the nights getting darker it’s even more of a concern.
“Cllr Derek Wright has been pushing for a resolution to this issue for some time and thanks to him the area will soon be a lot safer.”

Cllr Wright said: “I’ve been working closely with council officers on this, who in turn have been talking to with Tesco and the company who installed the crossing, Longcross.
“Longcross had ordered new posts and lights, but unfortunately went into administration. I’m assured that this work will be completed as soon as possible.”

Tesco said the work is a priority and could be completed in the next fortnight.
