Clwyd South AM Ken impressed with enterprising pupils at Johnstown Junior School

Enterprising pupils were given top marks after impressing Clwyd South Assembly Member Ken Skates.

Labour AM Mr Skates visited Johnstown Juniors on Wednesday (April 9) to learn more about an ‘innovative’ education programme and meet the pupil-run school council.

The school’s Skills Enterprise scheme, the brainchild of headteacher Robert Pullen, sees children of all ages put into mixed groups every week to learn new practical skills such as bicycle maintenance, cooking, sewing and First Aid.

Mr Skates, who is also the Welsh Government’s Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, said: “It was fascinating to hear about the school’s Skills Enterprise programme, it’s a really innovative idea and will help the children learn new things outside the classroom which they can then continue as hobbies and which could also help them in later life.

“I think it’s also a really forward-thinking idea to mix the children up so they get more time interacting with pupils from other classes and of all ages. I was really impressed with how enthusiastic they were and it’s another fantastic example of how extra-curricular activities can enhance our children’s education.”

Mr Skates also met pupils of the school council, which is made up of three children from each class – 21 in total. He added: “I really enjoyed my visit to Johnstown and it was great meeting the pupils. It’s a wonderful school and I’m sure the Estyn report due to be published soon will highlight many positives and will reflect the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and pupils.”
