Clwyd South AM Ken Skates confirms new foodbank to open in Penycae

A new foodbank which will serve a cluster of communities near Wrexham is to launch later this month.

The ‘satellite’ centre – a branch of Wrexham Foodbank – will open from 10am-noon every Wednesday from June 25 at St Thomas Village Hall in Penycae.

Semi-retired Ruabon businessman and former community council chairman David Jones offered to spearhead the charity project after a public plea from Clwyd South AM Ken Skates.

Labour AM Mr Skates said: “I asked for help in attempting to tackle locally the impact of rising food poverty across the UK, and David responded with enthusiasm immediately.

“It shouldn’t be the case that – in one of the richest countries in the world – millions of people are being forced to rely on foodbanks, but while there continues to be a problem we need people like David. He’s worked incredibly hard to make this happen.”

Mr Jones, who runs Lyan Packaging on Wrexham Industrial Estate, said: “The hall is ideally located on a major bus route and will serve the communities of Penycae, Rhos and Johnstown and their surrounding communities, and will mean people won’t have to travel to the main foodbank in Wrexham to redeem their vouchers.

“I’m also looking into the possibility of operating another satellite centre from Plas Madoc, and maybe even a third to serve the Llangollen-Corwen corridor further down the line.”
