Coleg Cambria students quiz Clwyd South AM Ken Skates in Wrexham

WREXHAM students got the chance to quiz a Welsh Assembly Member during a question and answer session at college.

Deputy Minister for Technology and Skills, Ken Skates, was put on the spot by a health and social care class at Coleg Cambria on Friday (December 13) and said it was ‘fantastic to meet so many enthusiastic young people’.

During the visit Mr Skates, the Labour AM for Clwyd South, was asked about mental health issues, youth employment and new initiatives regarding looking after cared-for children.

He said: “I had a great time meeting the students and was really impressed with the range of topics they brought up and how knowledgeable they were in so many areas.

“I love doing question and answer session as they’re a fun but productive way of engaging with young people, and it was a good challenge to be put on the spot by students who really know their stuff.

“When I do these visits it’s always good to see people become more and more responsive as they realise just what an important role politics plays in their everyday lives, and I hope the students enjoyed the morning as much as I did.”

Mr Skates added: “As always I was made very welcome at Coleg Cambria, which is beacon of excellence and is an example to other educational establishments throughout Wales.”

Tutor Wendy Fowler said the group were all aged between 16 and 19 and hope to progress to careers in education or the healthcare sector.

She added: “The students really enjoyed the session and found it very informative and engaging. I think they were pleasantly surprised to find out more about Ken and what made him go into politics.

“They could also identify with his background and listening to their comments I think they have realised that politics is relevant to their own lives.”
