Ken Skates AM holds Q&A session with Maelor School, Penley

More than 100 sixth form students from Wrexham and Denbighshire got to put their AM on the spot during a Question Time event at a high school.

Ken Skates, the Labour Assembly Member for Clwyd South, was quizzed by teenagers from the Maelor School, Penley, who were joined by students from Ysgol Rhiwabon and Ysgol Dinas Bran in Llangollen on Friday afternoon (November 21).

Mr Skates organised the event with the aim of engaging young people in his constituency.

He said: “I loved the event from start to finish. I always say going into schools and colleges and meeting young people is my favourite part of my job, and it was fantastic to be able to talk to so many enthusiastic and well-informed students.

“I’m told this was the first time all three sixth forms in Clwyd South had done an event together, so I hope the students enjoyed it as much as I did.”

Mr Skates added: “I had questions on a wide variety of subjects, including the under-representation of women in politics, the possibility of reducing the voting age to 16 – which I support – and the benefits to Britain of being part of Europe.

“This type of event gives young people the chance to scrutinise their elected representatives on issues that matter most to them. They also give teenagers a platform to learn more about how the National Assembly works and how its policies and laws affect them.

“I’d like to thank the students and schools who took part and I thank Mr Ellis, the headteacher at the Maelor, for hosting the event and for giving everyone such a warm welcome.”
