Ken Skates AM praises ‘fantastic’ healthy eating initiative in Rhosymedre

CLWYD South AM Ken Skates has praised a ‘fantastic’ new volunteer-run healthy eating initiative in Rhosymedre.

Labour Assembly Member Mr Skates said the village’s weekly food co-op – launched in December and based at St John’s Church – is a great way to encourage and promote healthy eating at affordable prices while supporting the local economy.

Mr Skates said: “The co-op is a not-for-profit venture giving residents access to buying quality fresh fruit, vegetables and salad at wholesale prices. I know there is another one at Coedpoeth, and I would love to see more in Clwyd South as I think they’re a fantastic idea.”

The Angorfa Food Co-op is at the church every Wednesday from 10.30am-11.30am and offers small, medium and large bags of fruit and veg for £2, £4 and £6 respectively.

Mr Skates said: “Residents can just turn up, place your order and pay, and then collect your bag of fruit or veg the following week. Healthy Start vouchers are also accepted as payment and anyone can use the co-op.

“All the food co-ops in Wales are run by volunteers as a not-for-profit community activity and are linked with a local business, for example a wholesaler or farmer, so as well as eating healthily and saving money you’re also helping the local economy.”
