Ken Skates AM supports pupils over speeding near Madras School, Penley

PUPILS have called on their AM to help stop speeding outside a village school.

Ken Skates, the Labour Assembly Member for Clwyd South, visited the Madras VA School in Penley on Friday morning (February 21) to discuss the ongoing issue with the 13 pupils from Years 2-6 on the school council.

Mr Skates said: “I was delighted to be invited to the school by the pupils and teacher Amanda Kempster, and it was great to meet them. However, I was concerned with what they were telling me about the number of irresponsible drivers speeding right outside the main gates.

“You would think people would have more sense than to drive fast outside a school, but sadly it seems selfish individuals are routinely ignoring the limit and signs and potentially putting lives in danger.”

The pupils want the current 30mph limit reduced to 20mph as soon as possible, and also want Wrexham Council to improve the existing signage.

Mr Skates added: “I told the pupils I would support their campaign to address the problem, and I will be making immediate representations to the council on their behalf. The children’s safety is paramount, so I will be urging the authority to act quickly. I would also ask motorists to heed the pupils’ plea and slow down.”
