Labour AM Ken Skates welcomes Coleg Cambria staff pay rise move

Assembly Member Ken Skates has applauded Coleg Cambria after it confirmed it would give employees a pay rise to combat increasing living costs.

Labour AM Mr Skates praised the expanding college for leading ‘not only in education and innovation, but also in how it treats its hard-working staff’.

Coleg Cambria, which operates from six sites in North East Wales including Deeside and Wrexham, recently announced it had fulfilled its commitment to give staff a 1% cost-of-living pay increase in 2014-15.

The move defied the recommendation of college body ColegauCymru, which is waiting until next year’s public funding is confirmed before deciding whether to award pay increases.

Clwyd South AM Mr Skates said: “I applaud Coleg Cambria for seeing through its vow to give employees a pay increase to help offset ever-spiralling living costs. The college continues to lead the way not only in terms of education and innovation, but also in how it treats its hard-working staff.

“We all know that budgets are tight at present – for the public sector as well as individuals and families – because of UK Government austerity and funding cuts, as well as things like rising energy costs, but it is not fair to expect the college’s employees to pay for that.”

Mr Skates said many members of staff had not had a pay rise for several years, and praised the role many had played in the college’s recent transformation and expansion.

He added: “The staff are a major part of the success Coleg Cambria has enjoyed over the past few years, and this move will go some way to rewarding them for their continued dedication and excellence.”
