New Clwyd South foodbank to serve Penycae, Johnstown and Rhos set to open, AM confirms

A new foodbank will open next week to serve some of the most vulnerable people in a cluster of communities near Wrexham.

The ‘satellite’ centre – a branch of Wrexham Foodbank – will open from 10am-noon every Wednesday from June 25 at St Thomas Village Hall in Penycae. There will also be a coffee morning at the premises at the same time every week.

Semi-retired Ruabon businessman David Jones offered to spearhead the charity project after a public plea from Clwyd South’s Labour AM Ken Skates.

Mr Jones, who runs Lyan Packaging on Wrexham Industrial Estate, said: “The hall is ideally located on a major bus route and will serve Penycae, Rhos and Johnstown and their surrounding communities, and will mean people won’t have to travel to the main foodbank in Wrexham to redeem their vouchers.”

People struggling to make ends meet are given foodbank vouchers by doctors, district nurses, schools, the Citizens Advice Bureau and other welfare agencies, which can then be redeemed at the main Wrexham Foodbank or one of its branches.

There are other satellite centres at Brynteg and Gwersyllt, with plans for another to serve Caia Park. Mr Jones, a former chairman of Ruabon Community Council, is also exploring the possibility of operating further bases to serve Plas Madoc and the Llangollen-Corwen corridor.

If you would like to volunteer to help, call Mr Jones 07930 501513 or contact Wrexham Foodbank direct on 01978 311076.
