Ken Skates AM asks council to reverse Corwen care home eviction

Clwyd South AM Ken Skates is calling on Denbighshire County Council to overturn a decision to evict a 90-year-old woman from a care home.

Labour Assembly Member Mr Skates says he will write to the authority’s chief executive Dr Mohammed Mehmet to implore him to allow Marion Brown to remain at Cysgod-y-Gaer in Corwen despite a ‘ban’ on new residents.

The rule was introduced amid uncertainty over the future of council-run care homes in the county because of budget cuts handed down by the UK Government.

Mrs Brown was admitted to Cysgod-y-Gaer as a temporary patient following eye surgery in December, but has been forced to look for somewhere else to live.

Mr Skates said: “Mrs Brown is a popular member of the local community and people want her to be allowed to remain at Cysgod-y-Gaer, as we have seen from the public outcry since she was asked to leave.

“I understand the council is in a very difficult position, but the consultation into the future of council-run care homes isn’t due to begin for another few weeks so nothing can have been decided yet. If the future of a school was uncertain, would it stop taking in new pupils? I doubt it.

“Mrs Brown is recovering from an important operation, and at the age of 90 I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking she deserves to be treated better than this. Common sense needs to prevail.”

Mr Skates said he would write to Dr Mehmet to ask him to overturn the decision ‘as a matter of urgency’.
