AM Ken Skates has lunch with pupils during National School Meals Week

CLWYD South Assembly Member Ken Skates was full of praise for kitchen staff after lunch at a village school.

Mr Skates visited Hanmer Primary for a question and answer session with pupils before enjoying a ‘delicious’ dinner on Friday, November 8, as part of National School Meals Week.

“I really enjoyed my visit – school meals have certainly improved hugely since my days in short trousers,” he said.

“The kitchen staff at Hanmer obviously work very hard to ensure the children’s meals are balanced and nutritious, which is paramount, but also that they taste good. Personally speaking my lunch was delicious!”

National School Meals Week is a Local Authority Caterers Association programme which ran from November 4-8 and asks schools to provide a free lunch to every pupil who wants one.

Labour AM Mr Skates said: “Generally speaking school meals are the best they have ever been and are now something to be celebrated. I’m certainly hoping my next visit to Hanmer coincides with lunchtime!”

Mr Skates had earlier been put on the spot by pupils, who quizzed him about nutrition, the Welsh language and the role of councils.

He added: “Visiting schools in the constituency is one of my favourite parts of the job, and something I try to do as often as I can.

“I love engaging with the pupils and giving them the opportunity to ask me all sorts of questions, and the children at Hanmer were very welcoming and enthusiastic.”
