Cefn Mawr health centre petition nears 1,000 signatures

A petition calling for a new health centre in Cefn Mawr is closing in on 1,000 signatures just two weeks after being launched.

Residents and local councillors say the village’s Caritas Surgery is ‘not fit for purpose’, and they want a new facility at the former Co-op site on Well Street.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which says there are ‘some complexities’ over the location, has been urged not to miss ‘a golden opportunity’ to provide a state-of-the-art centre by Cefn Community Council chairman Ken Bathers.

And his plea has been echoed by the 800 people who have signed a petition launched by Clwyd South Assembly Member Ken Skates in mid-October.

Cllr Bathers said: “We are sending a clear message to Betsi Cadwaladr that a new medical centre in the Cefn area should be a top priority. We will no longer accept a second-class facility that’s not fit for purpose. It was built in the 1940s. Here we are in the 21st century with almost Victorian facilities!

He added: “We are pressing for a new centre on the old Co-op site as a matter of urgency, and I will be devastated if we miss this golden opportunity. The people of Cefn Mawr and Rhosymedre need and deserve this.”

Labour AM Mr Skates has been at the forefront the campaign with Cllr Bathers and county councillor Derek Wright.

He said: “The fact that 800 people have signed this petition within a couple of weeks reiterates how strongly they feel – there’s an incredible demand here. Ken has been pushing for this for a long time and I’m determined to help him deliver it.”

The petition can be signed at several places in Cefn, including Caritas Surgery, Cefn Mawr Post Office and George Edwards Hall. Volunteers will be at Tesco in Cefn Mawr on the morning of Friday, November 6th to gather more signatures and support.
